“I’m going to be a dad.” Jim said, testing the words on his lips as if they were both the most wonderful and confusing moment of his day. “I’m going to be a… dad. I’m…” And as if his words had finally clicked and he knew what he was saying, Jim jumped out of his seat and pulled you close. “...Going to be a dad!”

You couldn't help smile at his sheer enthusiasm.

“I’m glad you’re excited.” Your hands rested on Jim’s shoulders as you watched his face filled with excitement.

“Well yeah I’m going to be a dad! I love you so much.” He planted a brief kiss on your lips before squatting down to eye level with your stomach.

“Hey there little guy. I love you too. And I promise to be the best daddy you would ever wish for.”

“You know our baby can’t hear you, right?” You laughed as Jim entangled you in a hug again and kissing your cheek.

“I don’t care. I’m going to be a dad!”

-

“It’s really hard to cuddle you when I’m this fat.” You said as you wriggled your way to comfort on the couch. Jim laughed as he pulled you close. At last you found comfort, though you were sure that you were causing your husband all sorts of discomfort.

“You’re not fat, you’re pregnant.” He reminded you, rubbing your stomach. A giant smile lit up his face as he watched his hand move over your rounded belly.

“Whatever. I miss being able to go into public and not have my belly touched by strangers or asked if it’s a boy or a girl. And sleeping on my stomach.” You smoothed Jim’s hair out, wondering if he had remembered to brush it this morning. Not that it mattered, it wasn't like you had plans to leave the house today.

“And being able to go to work and wear my normal uniform. The dress I have to wear now makes me feel huge. Like, I’m big, but I’m not that big.”

“Well I think that you’re absolutely gorgeous all the time and I’m so excited and you’re kind of glowing all the time. An next time I’m with you in public I’m going to touch everyone’s stomachs until they’re uncomfortable.” Jim laughed, and you couldn't help but join in.

You were painting the nursery when the baby first kicked. Jim was across the room and you were pouring out more paint into the tray when you felt the gentle thump. Good thing you were sitting or you would have fallen over in surprise.

“What’s wrong?” Jim asked when you set the can of paint down and felt your stomach, accidentally smearing paint on your shirt.

“Nothing, the baby just kicked.” Saying the words out loud put you in a state of awe. There had been moments in the past few months where you thought the baby might have been kicking, but you didn't know what to expect. This was definitely a kick though.

“No way.” Jim rushed over and sat next to you, putting his hand over your wet paint print on your shirt. You felt the kick, and from the look on Jim’s face, he felt it too. He looked as if he had just discovered buried treasure, one of the wonders of the world. He leaned over and kissed you before addressing your stomach, a habit you hadn't gotten used to yet.

“You know, little guy, you surprise me every day. I’m so excited to get to meet you.” He said, smiling so wide. There was paint in his hair and on his face. You had no intent to move, mostly because you thought this was absolutely adorable. Every part of you adored the fatherly love Jim had for his unborn child, and it was contagious.

“Junior here just kicked my bladder. Momma’s gotta go to the bathroom. Again.” You said, trying to get up, but hindered by your belly. Jim offered you his hand and you took it. "I’ll be right back.”

-

“What should we name her?” Jim asked, sitting next to you on the hospital bed. You felt so tired and you were sure you looked like you had just climbed out from under a bridge, but the baby in your arms made it all worth it. She was so small and fragile looking. Everything about her was just so little.

“I really didn't think about this too much. I always thought you had picked out a couple.” You blushed at the embarrassment included in admitting you didn't think about what to name your child. In your defense, you were still stuck in the part of pregnancy where you worried you would mess up. Jim had always seemed like he knew what he would be doing and would be able to teach you. So you left the names up to him for the most part.

“Well I thought that if I was going to learn about all the child raising stuff you would pick out some names. Plus, I’m too distracted to think of names.” He said. The nurse that had been in the room at the time shook her head in disapproval before leaving.

“That’s too bad because I just pushed our little angel out after three hours of pain. I think I get the right to be out of it.” You reasoned. “So start thinking.”

“We could name her after your mother.” He suggested and you shot him a glare.

“No. How about Willow or Kaylee?” You recalled the names you had thought that you’d like to name your children, and both of those names had come up.

“I like Kaylee. What about her middle name?” Jim asked, gently running a hand over Kaylee’s forehead. “Also, did I mention you’re actually glowing right now? For real. It’s beautiful.”

“You've only mentioned it a million times. You get to pick out the middle name. I don't want to be solely responsible if she grows up hating her name.” Jim sighed.

“Well how about my mother’s name then. Kaylee Winona Kirk.”

“I like it.” You said, leaning over and kissing Jim’s cheek. “But if she turns out like your mother, I’m going to divorce you.”

“Deal.” Jim said, kissing you back. “I love you.”

“I love you too.”
I figured we all kind of need a pick me up, and well I wrote this. It's okay I guess.
